Also known as the Eleanor Brent Library
Pacific Library Experience
The Pacific School Library strives to instill a life-long love of reading in the students. The main goal of the Pacific Library program is for the students to become independent library users and information literate. Each time the students visit the library, they have story time or a library activity as well as the opportunity to check out library materials. (See the Destiny catalog containing all books in our Pacific library).
Kindergartners focus on “library citizenship” (the care and handling of library materials), learning the library layout and selection of library books.
First Graders review what was learned in Kindergarten and broader selection of books: fiction vs. non-fiction, reading levels, arrangement of sections of the library.
Second Graders are introduced to the idea of information literacy in the selection of library materials for a specific purpose (a research report) and for personal needs (reading level and/or subject matter).
Third Graders learn about library organization and the Dewey Decimal Classification system. They are formally introduced to the automated catalog system and learn how to locate an item on the shelves that they’ve found in the catalog via the call number.
Fourth Graders earn the privilege of using the library at lunch recess independently from a class setting. They are expected to be able to search for books they desire using their knowledge of the library layout and using the automated library catalog. (OPEN FOR LUNCH RECESS ON MONDAYS AND TUESDAYS)
Fifth Grade may continue to use the library at lunch recess. They visit the library with their classes on an as needed basis. (OPEN FOR LUNCH RECESS ON WEDNESDAYS AND THURSDAYS)
